Care of the Geriatric Patient Course

The attendee will have increased knowledge regarding the Texas BON requirement regarding Older Adult / Geriatric care, the physiologic changes in older adults that contribute to disease processes, chronic conditions and memory loss, adaptation of care for this special population, including injury prevention and identification of elder abuse and reporting requirements. This course fulfills the Texas Board of Nursing Care of Geriatric Population Requirement for Licensure.

Learner Objectives
  • Discuss the geriatric patient as its relates to healthcare population management, preventive care, and disease processes.
  • Describe measuring of assessment, intervention, and safety of elder abuse.
  • Discuss age related physiologic and mental changes, co-morbidities, and chronic conditions.
  • Discuss ethical standards pertaining to right to life, end of life, and family and patient directives.

Texas Statute

Continuing Education in Older Adult or Geriatric Care: Nurses whose practice includes older adult or geriatric populations shall complete at least two hours of CE related to older adult or geriatric populations or maintain certification in practice area related to older populations.

Older Adult/Geriatric Care: Any LVN, RN, or APRN whose practice includes the older adult or geriatric population is required to complete at least two contact hours in every licensure cycle beginning on or after January 1, 2014 [Board Rule 216.3(h)]. The content must include information relating to elder abuse, age related memory changes and disease processes, including chronic conditions, and end of life issues [Board Rule 216.3(h)(1)]. A nurse may choose to complete more than one course in order to cover all content required in the rule.
